According to a Japanese study done by lead researcher Dr. Kazushige Goto (PhD), you may actually burn more fat when you take a break in the middle of your workout as compared to doing one long workout without stopping.
Contrary to popular belief, many people believe that long, prolonged exercise will best to burn body fat but studies performed by Dr. Goto’s team shows that “repetition of shorter exercise may cause enhancements of fat metabolism and utilization during and after the exercise”.
He believes that his team’s findings may help in the design of future exercise plans.
In his study, Dr. Goto used a group of seven healthy men who are physically active and familiar with exercise. They all had about 18% body fat with an average age of 25.
They were made to do 3 different trials:
- One 60 minute workout followed by a 60 minute rest period (Single);
- Two 30 minute workouts but with a 20 minute rest in between followed by a 60 minute rest period after the exercise (Repeated); &
- One 60 minute rest period (Control).

All the above were performed on a single cycle ergometer (just a fancy stationary bicycle) and here were the findings:
- The Repeated trial showed a greater amount of lipolysis (fat breakdown) compared to the Single trial;
- The Repeated trial also showed that a significant increase in free fatty acids and glycerol in the last 15 minutes of exercise as compared to the single trial. The release of these chemical compounds shows that stored body fat is being used, therefore, the higher the reading, the better;
- The second 30 minute workout in the Repeated trial also shows a more rapid fall in insulin concentration;
- Enhanced fat oxidaton was also noticed during the rest period after the Repeated trial but this may be because the level of free fatty acids was already high before the rest period.
This study has proven that splitting up a long workout into two with a rest period in between may actually help you burn fat faster.
Psychologically, this may also help you rethink your workouts and finally get you going if you have previously balked at the idea of doing one long, boring workout.
