Lose Weight By Sleeping More!
Having trouble losing weight and burning fat? You may be sleeping too little.
One reason such a huge majority of people are overweight can be explained by their sedentary lifestyles. However, experts are warning that not getting enough sleep may be the reason why we are putting on fat as a lack of sleep can mess with our metabolism as well as changing our eating and activity patterns.
An expert study in Japan showed that children who slept only 8 to 9 hours a day, compared to those who slept 9 to 10 hours, were almost twice as likely to be overweight. Even more interestingly, those who slept less than 8 hours were 3 times more likely to be overweight.

Why is this so?
Firstly, a hormone called cortisol controls metabolism of sugar, fat, minerals, protein and water in our bodies. Stress, whether physical or emotional, causes cortisol levels to rise. Not getting enough sleep also raises cortisol levels.
Secondly, insulin resistance (where your body has higher levels of insulin) has been linked to lack of sleep as well. Since insulin controls blood sugar as well as promoting the storage of fat, high levels of insulin will make losing weight and burning fat more difficult for you.
Although further research is being done on the above, let us look at another reason why the lack of sleep can cause us to gain weight.
When you have not slept enough the night before, what happens the following day? You probably feel tired and sluggish. To get a quick “pick-me-up”, you may turn to grabbing a quick snack. The blood sugar may energize you for the short term but as the body does not require these calories, they are stored as fat.
Besides, you’ll most probably reach for something convenient like a candy bar or a doughnut, both high in refined sugar and carbohydrates. Since you are sleep deprived, your insulin levels are higher as well and these extra calories will be very easily stored as fat owing to the insulin resistance.

See how vicious the cycle is?
In addition, when you do not get enough sleep, you are also probably too tired to exercise. And if you do manage to get some exercise in, you will work out less intensely as compared to a well rested person and end up burning far fewer calories.
The National Sleep Foundation reports that the average American sleeps just under seven hours a day and a third of these adults sleep less than six and a half hours.
Sleep experts are still recommending that adults get at least eight hours of sleep a night.
Hey, you get to feel more energized, enjoy a general sense of well being and burn more fat all at the same time – just by sleeping more…
And that sounds really good to me!
