Sugar Substitutes Or Artificial Sweeteners May Actually Make You Fat!

But did you know that artificial sweeteners may actually make you fat?

Associate Professor Susan Swithers of Purdue University researched the effects of sugar substitutes and had some surprising findings. In her study, she found that rats that were getting artificially sweetened food actually gained more weight and ate more food overall.

“The take-home message is that consumption of artificially sweetened products may interfere with an automatic process.” Swithers said.

The process that Swithers is talking about is the body’s ability to detect that it’s full. When you eat sweet foods, a sweet taste may signal to your body that calories are being ingested and that your body should prepare for the arrival of these calories. But when you are eating sugar substitutes and there are no calories, your body’s digestive system may not know what to do and your metabolism may not be revved up as much the next time sweetness is tasted.

In the end, the consumption of artificial sweeteners may cause your body to not expect any calories when sweet foods are eaten and you may respond by consuming more calories.

Do note that this research was done on rats and may not necessarily translate to humans. Swithers has mentioned that performing the test on humans may be difficult as not many people have not encountered artificial sweeteners in their food before.

This is a controversial topic as many people have sworn that using artificial sweeteners have helped them lose weight by way of satisfying their sweet tooth without the calories.

But why take that chance? Eating natural, unprocessed foods and exercising is still the best way to lose weight and burn that fat.
