The Most Common Misconceptions Of The Atkins Diet

AtkinsLogoMany people have the wrong ideas when it comes to the Atkins Diet.

They incorrectly think that the Atkins Diet promotes eating as much fatty meats and cheeses as possible. In his most recent works, Dr Atkins tries to clarify this by saying that the diet is “not a license to gorge”, even though there are no limits set on certain foods or the number of calories you should be eating in general.

There may also be confusion between the definition of ketosis and ketoacidosis:

Ketosis is when the body burns stored body fat when glucose is not present as a source of energy. The body does this by either burning fat directly or by converting fat to ketones, which makes the energy of fat available in water soluble form.

Ketoacidosis, on the other hand, is when the body is unable to utilize glucose owing to a lack of insulin and when there is an excess amount of ketones produced by the kidneys because of severe dehydration.

Some people may also misunderstand the Induction Phase with the rest of the diet. To clarify:

Firstly :

The first two weeks of the diet are definitely strict, where you can only eat about 20g of carbs a day. After that however, it is clear that the number of carbs per day should be slowly increased. Once you have reached your ideal weight, you should be increasing your carbs even more. Even though the new carb level is still lower than that recommended by the USDA standards, it’s still within or slightly above the definition of ketosis.

Secondly :

The Induction Phase is well known for its low intake of dietary fiber. This in itself causes people to think that this is the same for the rest of the diet.

In contrary, fiber supplements like psyllium husks are recommended for the early stages.

Also, many people think that dieters on the Atkins Diet do not eat enough fruits & veggies. In fact, dieters who follow this plan correctly will be getting enough veggies in the form of dark green leafy vegetables, even in the Induction Phase. For example, on an online survey, many on this diet have even claimed to eat more veggies on this plan than they would normally eat.
