The Mayo Clinic Diet Plan is a sensible and enjoyable eating plan that was actually developed by experts at the world famous Mayo Clinic.
Here’s How It Works
This diet was developed by the experts at the world renowned Mayo Clinic – namely Dr. Donald Hensrud, M.D. and Dr. Jennifer Nelson, PhD.
Basically, this eating plan is guided by the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid shown below :
As can be seen from the pyramid, the diet focuses more on eating fruits and vegetables – two food groups that you can practically eat unlimited amounts of in this eating plan. If you’re a fruits & veggie person, you’ll love this program.
Not only do you eat lots of fruits and vegetables, you’ll also get to choose from a variety of other food groups as well.
The Mayo Clinic Diet Plan however, limits foods high in saturated fat and sugar.
One good thing about this diet is that you can eat until you feel full and satisfied. This, I feel, is a good thing as you’ll feel that you’re not being deprived of food and that should help you stick to this program.
And What Can I Eat?
As mentioned above, this weight loss program lets you practically eat unlimited amounts of fruits and vegetables. It also emphasizes food groups like lean meat, low fat dairy, whole grains and good fats like olive oil, nuts and canola oil.
Foods that are high in sugar and saturated fat should be avoided.
How About Exercise?
Exercise is very important on this program – look at the pyramid again, daily physical activity is right at the center of it. Exercise is important as it will lead to healthier and more efficient weight loss while on this diet.
The Mayo Clinic Diet Plan is one of the healthiest and most natural eating plans around. As such, this will be a great diet for you if you’re suffering from high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels or Type II diabetes. It may also be good for dieters suffering from certain types of cancer or are considered clinically obese.
This is one of the best weight loss programs out there as eating all the fruits and vegetables fills you up and gives you lots of nutrients with a small amount of calories.
Because you can eat virtually eat unlimited amounts of fruits and veggies, you’ll definitely feel full on this diet.
However, please don’t confuse the official Mayo Clinic Diet Plan with the many versions that have popped up over the years.
These diets claim to be the Mayo Clinic Diet Plan by having names like the New Mayo Clinic Diet, The Grapefruit Diet…etc. These are all fad diets and are not recognized or endorsed by the real Mayo Clinic.
These fad diets push foods like grapefruit, eggs or meat and promises to peel off fat magically. Even though such diets may cause you to lose a lot weight quickly, these diets are in fact, not nutritionally balanced and may even be dangerous for some people over the long term. Even though grapefruit is a wonderful fruit, it doesn’t contain any magical substance that melts fat away.
Also, while it is healthy to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, some of you out there may not be big lovers of these two food groups. Therefore, the main thing is to ask yourself, is this a diet that I can maintain over the long term?
